Rules

Golf is a simple game; maybe that's why we love it so! After all it only has 24 rules! Of course there are about 3 zillion interpretations of those rules.  We should be aware of the difference between a ball out of bounds and one hit into a penalty area. We should know how many penalty strokes apply and where the next ball should be played from. We should always be aware of the “local rules” as each golf course we play has different and distinct local rules. Our charter states that “USGA rules” govern our play. So we should try to gain a rudimentary knowledge of those rules to make our games more enjoyable and to be fair to our fellow golfers.

All players must hole out on every hole (i.e., no "gimme's").

In every case where you are not sure of the rule, ask your playing partners how the rules apply.

If a ball is hit out of bounds or looks like it may be close to out, you can hit a provisional ball.   If the ball is not found, or is determined to be out of bounds, the provisional ball must be played with a stroke and distance penalty.  Alternatively, instead of hitting a provisional ball, a ball can be dropped in the vicinity of where the ball went out of bounds or was lost, with a two stroke penalty.

If the ball is hit into a penalty area, know your options for a drop.

Some players have complained that not all strokes are being counted. Please be honest about your stroke count.

The game will be more enjoyable and equitable for every player if we all play by the rules.
